Freight on rails: new records for La Spezia

Genoa - Along with Trieste, La Spezia is the Italian port that has the highest rate of use of the rail modality.

Genoa - 2017 was a record year for the La Spezia Shunting Railways (LSSR), the company that has been responsible for planning and coordinating railway manoeuvres at the port since 2014, using Serfer’s (Mercitalia Group) personnel and vehicles as an expert manoeuvring company. The increase in manoeuvring activities (127,000 rail wagons, or +6.4%), corresponds to the increase in the railways’ share of La Spezia’s traffic, which has reached 33% of the total number of containers handled in port. Along with Trieste, La Spezia is the Italian port that has the highest rate of use of the rail modality. In terms of the activity of La Spezia Shunting Railways, the company closed 2017 having handled 126,911 wagons, or approximately 7,465 trains, 6.4% more than in 2016.

The company’s president, Federica Montaresi said, “2017 was a record year, in which we twice beat our best ever monthly result, in July (11,632 wagons) and again in October (monthly record at 11,727 wagons). We also handled more than 11,000 wagons in November (11,339). Our traffic has grown every year since 2014. LSSR and the Port System Authority’s objective is to ramp up to full capacity, moving 330,000 wagons and more than 13,000 trains every year. The heart of LSSR’s activity (terminal and logistics operators, railway companies and the Port Authority hold stakes in the company) is the operations room, which is an active control room for about 20 hours of every day. All train arrival and departure operations, both scheduled and unscheduled, are planned there in real time. Qualified professionals work in the operations room under the supervision of the rail planner.
