La Spezia - Intermarine, a subsidiary of the industrial group IMMSI, announces that it has been delivered to the Italian Navy an UNPAV unit (High Speed Multi-Purpose Vessel), called “Angelo Cabrini”. The ship, delivered in line with the timing of the schedule is the first of a wide multiple order consisting of two units, and meets the highest standards quality. The event, chaired by Admiral Chief Inspector Matteo Bisceglia, Director of Naval Armaments, from the Admiral of Division Paul Pezzutti, Comandante Combusin, and by Admiral Eduardo Serra, Logistic Commander of the Navy, it took place in Porto Lotti (La Spezia) at the presence of the management of Intermarine and the military and civil authorities.
The ship was given the name of “Angelo Cabrini”, admiral of the Italian Navy, decorated for the sinking of the English heavy cruiser “York” on March 26, 1941 in the bay of Suda in Crete. The UNPAV unit is a versatile and modern naval vehicle that will provide a high value to the Italian Navy’s, in particular by ensuring support for the activities of the its Special Forces (Gruppo operativo incursori - GOI), both in phase training that during real operations. The two units of the class (“Cabrini”, class president, and “Tedeschi”) will compete, also, to the control of maritime traffic, to the contrast of illicit trafficking, security in environments with threat asymmetric and evacuation of personnel from crisis areas. Versatility is one of the fundamental characteristics of the UNPAV unit, able to cope with multiple needs, thanks to a platform with free spaces dedicated to specific transport equipment of the Comsubin-GOI, capable of developing high speed and built with materials characterized by strength, protection ballistic, heat resistance, shielding from interference electromagnetic, reduced weight and high structural strength.
The unit, which can accommodate a crew of 27 people between crew fixed and Special Forces team embarked, it is built of material composite, has a length of 44.16 meters overall, a width of 8.4 meters for 1.5 meters of immersion, and a displacement of 185 tons. This platform allows boarding of a Rigid Hull Rhib Inflatable Boat Zodiac Hurricane 733 in use at the GOI, via one aft slide and an integrated launch and recovery system. UNPAV propulsion consists of three pairs of Kamewa waterjets and MTU 16V 2000 M94 engines, installed in two different engine rooms, ensures the speed of the unit maximum of over 32 knots. The waterjets offer great maneuverability and high reactivity such as to keep the platform stable and steady side by side with other units. The unit is characterized by a high automation that guarantees the containment of the number of components crew. The bridge is ballistically protected and allows a 360 ° view.
There integrated dashboard console allows control of the whole Combat System as well as navigation equipment and management of the unit and the control and monitoring system of platform. A modular area in the aft area of the covered deck allows different types of operations such as naval assault operations, release and recovery of GOI operators employed in Operations Special. Moreover, in particular configurations it is possible to foresee installation of a containerized decompression chamber for the support for underwater activities. There are some unit rooms completely dedicated to hosting the COMBUSIN equipment.
