“I DON’T agree with Mr Aponte that the New Silk Road isn’t a great opportunity. In my opinion, we will be able to do great things thanks to this project”, says Augusto Cosulich, a Genoese entrepreneur in logistics who is active all over the world and has a deep knowledge of China. The statements that set Cosulich off were made by Gianluigi Aponte, owner of the shipping company MSC (active mainly in the container and cruise sectors), during the International Forum organized by Conftrasporto in Cernobbio: “The Silk Road,” said Aponte in one of his rare public statements, “is more ideological than practical. It leaves us indifferent. Perhaps it will help, but it will be quite secondary...” The shipowner expressed concern not only about the project, but also about Chinese policy in general: “China is arrogant. It’s not an easy relationship. It is not an attitude that I am saying they take only with us, or even that they take with us from time to time, but in general. They call the shots, especially at home, and so...”.
But according to Augusto Cosulich, the problem is not the Chinese expansion, but the obstacles that trade is facing in other parts of the world: “It’s a bit sad to see protectionist policies grow, instead of free trade.” The Fratelli Cosulich group is active in various shipping sectors with offices all over the world. As a shipping agency it represents China’s COSCO shipping line companies, and Turkey’s Arkas.
