Santa Cruz de Tenerife - And where is the smoke? This is the first impression after a trip between Canary Islands and Madeira with “AidaNova”. In fact, no special emissions were ever noticed by the smokestack of the new flagship of Aida Kreuzfahrten (brand of the US group Carnival, within Costa Crociere) during the stay on board. This ship is the first in the world to be powered even when sailing with the liquefied natural gas that is regularly restocked weekly during the stop in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With “AidaNova” the cruise industry has undergone a green change that will significantly reduce the polluting emissions of passenger ships. The electric generation of this unit is guaranteed by four Caterpillar/Mak dual power engines for an installed power of 61.76 megawatts. It has three tanks for the storage of liquefied natural gas: two of 1,550 cubic meters of capacity each and another smaller of 520 cubic meters. The autonomy at full load of this ship is about two weeks of operation in LNG mode (which can vary according to the speed of navigation). Obviously speaking of dual fuel engines, the latter can also be powered by the traditional low sulfur content diesel or traditional fuel. This prototype is the first of a series of nine ships ordered by Carnival to the German group Meyer that will make them on its own sites in Papenburg and Turku. The brands to which they will be destined are Aida, Costa, Carnival and P&O.
At the moment “AidaNova” is the fifth largest cruise ship in the world (second only to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class giants), these are its numbers: 183,000 gross tons, 337 meters overall length, 42 meters of waterline width and 8.8 meters draft. The propulsion is guaranteed by two 18.5 MW Abb Azipods that allow it to reach a maximum speed of 21 knots, while the service one is around 17. The ship has available for the guests 2,626 cabins to house a maximum on board. of 6,654 passengers. Since Aida is part of the Costa group, all its ships fly the Italian flag and are therefore registered in Genoa. The organization of the catering on board the ships of Aida differs from that of any other company. In fact, on their ships all meals are served in the buffet, while if you want to have dinner served you have to opt for complementary restaurants for a fee. The new flagship has five buffets that are open for rotation throughout the day, from morning to evening. The variety and quality of food is excellent, without forgetting that there are very convenient distributors of the most popular soft drinks. Also at the tables there is always available the carafe of sparkling water and in the evening also that of wine. Those looking for something more sophisticated here is a varied choice of specialty restaurants: we find the Italian, French, Japanese and the unfailing grill.
Surely the symbol of German culinary habits is the Brauhaus; this salon is a miniature Oktoberfest, where cruise passengers can eat typical dishes of the Germanic culinary culture accompanied by live traditional music. The Theatrium, the center of the ship that serves as both an atrium and a theater, and the Beach Club, the covered swimming pool deck, are the center of life on board. It should also be mentioned the spa, one of the largest built on board a ship that is characterized by being unisex in respect of German culture.
