Palermo - “And the prize for best destination goes to.... Genoa!” The phrase should have been more or less that, when the representatives of CLIA, the cruise line association, read the name of the winner for “best destination” for cruises in Italy in the middle of the institutional dinner.
But no one was there to receive the prize: it fell on Roberto Martinoli, a Genoese manager and CLIA’s chief in Italy, to accept it on behalf of the city. Those present at the dinner confirmed that it was a bit of an embarrassment.
The prize is quite coveted, and this year it went to the city, not only to the port. In the final round of selection, the jury, which consisted of cruise lines, chose Genoa over Turin. But no one showed up at the event in Palermo: the City led by Marco Bucci (CLIA confirms that it invited the City Councillor for Tourism) was not able to attend, and because of other commitments, not even the Genoa Maritime Terminal was available to receive the award.
