Genoa - At 263 kilometres from southwest of the Pointe de Penmarch, south Finistère, in the Atlantic, twenty-seven people have been evacuated from a fire-stricken Italy-flagged roll-on/roll-off container (ConRo) vessel.

At 2 in the morning, the captain, the entire crew of 26 people and the only passenger on board have left the ship on a single safety boat, writes the Maritime Prefecture in its press release.

Built in 1997 by Fincantieri and belonging to the Grimaldi Group, the 214 meters long vessel was en route from Hamburg in Germany to Casablanca in Morocco.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
