Naples - A great deal of fear, but luckily no one was injured in the collision that occurred this morning off the coast of Castellabate, in the Cilento Sea, between a sailboat and a hydrofoil on the service linking the coastal resorts. The collision between the two boats took place off Punta Licosa shortly after nine o’clock.
According to an initial reconstruction of what happened, the hydrofoil, coming from the south with about two hundred people on board, violently hit the stern of the sailing boat which had three people on board. No one was injured, but it was very frightening, both for the crew of the sailboat and the hundreds of passengers on the hydrofoil, with scenes of panic just contained by the timely arrival of two vessels from the Agropoli Coast Guard, under the command of Lieutenant Giulio Cimmino.
While the occupants of the pleasure boat were transferred to the port of San Marco in Castellabate by a Coast Guard vessel, due to the massive damage suffered by the hull of the sailboat in the collision, the hydrofoil was instead made to dock in the port of Agropoli, where passengers were assisted at a first aid point set up by the local harbourmaster’s office.
With the vessels placed under administrative seizure, it is up to the harbourmaster’s office to define the dynamics and identify the causes of the collision.
