La Spezia - On the anniversary marking the events connected to the voyage described in the Hollywood movie Exodus, the Port System Authority has issued a call for the design of a memorial and an exhibition at the Pagliari Dock. The tender, titled “La Spezia, gateway to Zion”, aims at preserving and honouring the memory of events that took place in 1946, centred on the Jewish community, the city of La Spezia and its inhabitants.
The port, at that time, was the departure point for an initial cohort of 1,014 Jewish holocaust survivors heading to the newly established Israel, aboard the ships Fede and Fenice. The role of the City of La Spezia in that migration was honoured in 2006 when the Gold Medal for Civilian Merit was conferred on the city by the then Head of State, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
The design contest is open to anyone; either on an individual basis or as a group, Italian or non-Italian, 18-years old and older.
